I'm just going to post the photos first because DAMN!
What a privilege it was to not only work with NYC based photographer Magdalena Niziol but I finally got to work alongside my good friend, Charlotte, NC based stylist, Bryce Carey. Magdalena shot countless editorials and even the cover of NYLON: Singapore in May 2016. Bryce is the personal groomer for Olympic champion Ryan Lochte and is on staff at SEC Network in Charlotte. He's had work featured in Cosmopolitan.com and if there's a celebrity coming through town, I can guarantee you he's worked with them. Along with our models, we had a really great team and you can tell with the results of this shoot!
This was my first opportunity working on a set and being able to focus solely on makeup. Bryce SLAYED the hairs! Ohmigosh, do you see the shine in that hair!? Magdalena gave us some guidance on the looks but mostly left it up to us. One thing about me: I am a planner through and through. I have to have a mood board, notes, and looks. One of my life motto is "A failure to plan is a plan for failure." But for this shoot I didn't do as much planning (I still did a lil') since I was partnering with Bryce. I had a general idea of what I wanted to achieve with the shoot and we collaborated on the drive up to meet Magdalena. This experience forced me to think on my feet which is essential when working on set. If things go awry because the climate isn't agreeing with the selected hair style or I'm somewhere without access to power or we've had to switch the model up at the last minute, I have to be able to adapt to the situation.
For the looks, as you can tell, SKIN. MAN! I super love to celebrate the skin. I feel pretty comfortable saying that skin is one of my strengths. If you've worked with me or talked to me about my personal philosophies of makeup I truly feel that we should celebrate each person's wonderful features and use makeup to bring those features to the forefront. For Carlyle, our blonde model, she had a fantastic head of hair and wonderful brows. I also love her piercing blue eyes. Using some subtle sculpting, we brought some attention to her cheekbones and made those pop. But mostly, I let her features do the talking. Same goes for Cheyenne, she has GLORIOUS skin and brows. I did some light shaping to the brow with gel and powder but not too much as I wanted the brows to speak for themselves and I wanted the first thing one would say when they saw her images were "SKINNNNNN!!!"
Each model got a Sonia Roselli Beauty Sex A Peel treatment plus some Sonia Roselli Beauty WaterBalm. I will never go without those in my kit. OH OH! I just got four more boxes plus her Cleansing Oil in the mail today!!! YAYYYY!!!!! For my base, I used my ol' faithful, Face Atelier. I switch between that and the Cinema Secrets a lot. My decisions on which foundation to use is really based on how much coverage I need and what kind of result I want. Both these gals had nice, albeit dryer, skin so I need something with a lil slip of silicone. Face Atelier has a built in primer so that helped me skip a step. To set I really love my MAC Skin Finish Natural Powder. I need to find a way to depan those puppies so I can carry them everywhere. I use those powders personally too.
Check out the links below to see the rest of the products used. Special thanks again to Magdalena Niziol for making her way to the South to work with us and many thanks to Bryce for being 1) Magnificent, 2) A wonderful friend, and 3) Slaying the hell out of the hairs.
